Originally settled in the 17th century, Indian Trail began as a stop on a trading route that ran from Petersburg in Virginia to the Waxhaw Indian settlement. The Yamasee War in South Carolina spread across the NC border causing the reduction of the Waxhaw tribe. Land grants became available in 1752 and Indian Trail began developing.
From its early beginnings as a trading post, Indian Trail today has a strong retail economy. Much of the surrounding Union County is agricultural. The farmers enjoy the luxury of the 250,000 square foot Union Town Center Mall in Indian Trail. Being close to Interstate 485, which leads directly into the megalopolis of Charlotte, makes Indian Trail the perfect site for business. Distribution is becoming a key factor in the economy. The Harris Teeter Corporation has built a 300,000 square foot warehouse here.
Union County is North Carolina's fastest growing county as the Greater Charlotte Metropolitan Area consistently expands. Indian Trail reported a population of 11,905 in the Census 2000. The NC 2004 estimate showed 14,909. This proves a 513% growth since 1980, making Indian Trail the fastest growing municipality in Union County. A wide variety of housing exists in Indian Trail, from elegant historic homes, to brand new sub-developments. Real estate and construction firms form a solid part of Indian Trail’s economy.
Despite the recent upsurges in growth, Indian Trail residents maintain a commitment to their small-town values. A plethora of family activities is available. Residents here enjoy swimming, soccer, baseball and horseback riding. A number of close-knit churches help to keep the community strong. North Carolina rates Union County public schools as some of the best in the state. The close proximity to Charlotte places 16 fine colleges and universities within a forty-mile commute.
